Quick Take

  • Wormhole is integrating with both the XRP Ledger (XRPL) mainnet and the XRPL EVM sidechain.
  • The integration folds into Ripple’s broader strategy to position XRPL as an integral component of onchain, institutional finance.

Ripple is expanding XRP Ledger's multichain interoperability by integrating with Wormhole, the company said on Thursday.

Wormhole, one of the leading cross-chain interoperability protocols, is integrating with both the XRP Ledger (XRPL) mainnet and the XRPL EVM Sidechain,” Ripple said in a statement. “This integration will enable cross-chain messaging, asset transfers and multichain issuances of tokens.”

The integration folds into Ripple's broader strategy to position XRPL as an integral component of onchain, institutional finance. Massive financial institutions with interests in digital assets, firms like BlackRock, Securitize, and Apollo, all use Wormhole's services.

“If you want real mass adoption, interoperability is essential. The infrastructure has to be there, not just on one chain, but across them,” Ripple CTO and co-creator of XRPL David Schwartz said in Thursday's statement. “With this integration, tokens natively issued on the XRP Ledger are being set up for that reality by being able to move between blockchain networks while maintaining native issuance, and control.”

June has been a busy month for Ripple. The XRPL mainnet adopted Circle's USDC stablecoin, DeFi platform Ondo Finance added XRPL as a supported network for its onchain U.S. government debt product, and Ripple said it plans to launch its Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) sidechain in the second quarter of this year.

The integration will allow developers and institutions to move digital assets across more than 35 supported blockchains, while also enabling smart contract interactions across chains, according to Ripple.

“By integrating Wormhole into the XRP Ledger, we’re helping unlock even greater potential spanning all major blockchains for one of the most established blockchain networks in enterprise finance,” Wormhole Foundation co-founder Robinson Burkey also said in the statement.
