Quick Take

  • Data Streams combines low-latency market data and automated execution to unlock fast and user-friendly high-throughput DeFi products.
  • Chainlink VRF is the most widely adopted random number generator (RNG) in web3.

Chainlink Data Streams and Chainlink VRF are live as of Thursday morning on Base, the Layer 2 blockchain incubated by Coinbase. With these latest integrations, the entire Chainlink product suite is now available to Base developers.

Data Streams combines low-latency market data and automated execution to unlock fast, user-friendly, high-throughput DeFi products.

"By supplying high-frequency market data using robust, decentralized infrastructure, Chainlink Data Streams enables high-throughput DeFi products to create a seamless user experience comparable to CEXs while providing unprecedented onchain execution speed and battle-tested security infrastructure," the company said Thursday in a press release.

Chainlink is a decentralized computing platform that has enabled over $12 trillion in transaction value, according to the firm. Chainlink powers verifiable applications and high-integrity markets for banking, DeFi, gaming and other sectors.

Base is a decentralized blockchain network developed by Coinbase that uses Ethereum's Layer 2 blockchain to support decentralized applications (dApps).

“Base’s builder-friendly environment is a natural fit for Chainlink products, and we’re excited to see all of the Chainlink platform now available on Base,” Thodoris Karakostas, head of blockchain partnerships at Chainlink Labs said in the release. “Chainlink Data Streams low-latency market data will enable developers to build the next generation of DeFi products, while VRF will now enable smart contracts on Base to access random number generation securely.”

Chainlink VRF is the most widely adopted random number generator (RNG) in web3, according to the release, having fulfilled over 21 million request transactions for thousands of smart contracts. The recent VRF v2.5 upgrade introduces a few improvements for developers, including streamlined billing, and more accurate gas consumption predictions based on network conditions.

“We’re excited to see all of Chainlink’s infrastructure solutions are now on Base for developers to build next-gen onchain apps,” said Tom Vieira, head of product at Base.

Base developers now have access to Chainlink Data Streams and VRF, alongside CCIP, Functions and Price Feeds.

Earlier this year, Chainlink launched Transporter, an app for moving crypto tokens and messages between blockchains powered by its CCIP. It also announced a collaboration with Fidelity International and crypto bank Sygnum on a project that focuses on bringing net asset value data onchain.
