The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is said to be conducting an inquiry into Wednesday's attack on Twitter that resulted in the spread of bitcoin giveaway scam messages through accounts owned by major figures, crypto exchanges and more.

Reports from Reuters and the Wall Street Journal indicate that the U.S. agency has begun a probe but has yet to issue any public comments on the matter.

“We are aware of today’s security incident involving several Twitter accounts belonging to high profile individuals. The accounts appear to have been compromised in order to perpetuate cryptocurrency fraud," the FBI said as cited by Reuters.

As reported by The Block, yesterday's hack attack began in among crypto accounts and later accelerated with the hijacking of major tech figures Bill Gates and Elon Musk, among others.  By the end, accounts belonging to former U.S. president Barack Obama and former vice president Joe Biden, a 2020 presidential election contender, were used to broadcast fraudulent messages.
