Eddie Hughes, a member of the U.K. parliament and self-described "crypto enthusiast with amateur knowledge," has suggested, to his fellow Members of Parliament, that U.K. residents should be able to pay their council taxes and bills with bitcoin. Hughes noted that because the Royal National Lifeboat Institution can accept charitable donations through cryptocurrency, there is nothing that should stop U.K. residents from "being able to pay council tax and other bills with bitcoin." Hughes also believes that a lack of information and knowledge is what is hindering adoption. “People not understanding how the transaction works is holding us back in terms of mass adoption,” he said.

Hughes suggestion comes after the U.S. state of Ohio announced that it would allow businesses to pay their taxes with bitcoin — becoming the first U.S. state to offer that option. Ohio's state treasurer, Josh Mandel, has expressed his support for the industry, stating in an interview with The Block that he wants to show "the rest of the country that Ohio is the national leader in embracing blockchain."
