BitTorrent announces new live streaming product

BitTorrent is getting back into the live streaming game.

The firm announced Tuesday that it's accepting beta testers for BitTorrent Live, a live streaming service which lets users create live content and share it within their social circle. The service will be similar to the popular TikTok streaming app, according to a BitTorrent representative.

"Imagine chatting with your favorite athlete, becoming immersed in a music festival, or meeting new friends to share your passions - all by simply firing up the BitTorrent Live app," said Justin Sun, CEO of BitTorrent. "By using our decentralized technology, we aim to create a boundary-free internet but also be at the forefront of a new content experience." BitTorrent was acquired by Sun's other company, TRON, in 2018 for a rumored $126 million.

This is BitTorrent's second attempt at creating a live streaming service. In 2016, the firm announced a product by the same name. The product was ultimately shut down a year later after BitTorrent unsuccessfully tried to raise money to spin it out as a separate company.
