Joseph Muscat, the prime minister of Malta, used his UN speech last week to talk up cryptocurrency as well as his country. "Blockchain makes cryptocurrencies the inevitable future of money, more transparent since it helps filter good businesses from bad businesses," he said. Malta has been a leader in building regulatory frameworks for crypto, passing three bills in June as it declared itself "Blockchain Island."

The new laws encourage leading exchange Binance and other crypto firms to set up shop in the small nation. And Muscat believes things are just getting started with the tech. Suggesting blockchain has world-changing implications, Muscat talked up (1) giving people "real ownership" of personal medical records (2) tracking humanitarian aid efforts to make sure they are getting to intended recipients (3) bringing accountability to business and government through transparency.
